When scanning business records first started gaining significant traction several decades ago, smart developers started responding to requests for efficiencies on many levels. Many of these were/are fundamentally simple, but that didn’t limit their impact then, and it certainly doesn’t now.

The patch code is a great place to start. Scanner manufacturers started building the capability to read patch codes into their products in the 1980’s. These series of horizontal lines instruct the scanner to do many things, but in this case, we use it to tell the scanner to create a new document. The scanner will add new pages to the newly created document until it sees another patch code. Simple, yes, but anything that doesn’t require human intervention lowers costs, so that’s a win.

3) The bar code can create values that can be used to reach out to canvas external databases to locate matching data to prefill index/validation fields thus negating expensive operator keystrokes and elimination typing mistakes before they can happen.

In addition to the background operations described above, we can also place a significant amount of human readable information on the Separator sheet so that it can be married to the correct file when the documents are prepared for scanning.

The best feature of the Separator might be it’s disappearing act at the conclusion of all scanning activities. Post scanning, quality control, human validation of document type and indexing data, the Separator is automatically discarded as the digital files are released to whatever format the client has requested.
