The Adventure of Document Preparation

Document Preparation is the foundation of successful scanning. A procedure pioneered at Micro Com Systems, “Combining” is one of the first steps in Micro Com Systems’ digitalization process. During this exercise documents are classified and grouped according to type and size. It’s the phase that I’m most familiar with; after all, it’s what I do every day.

I could come here and write all about the fascinating world of removing staples, fixing holes with Scotch tape and trying to figure out if a paper is too big or too small for the bundle. But I think you aren’t ready for this kind of excitement, so I’ll write about the second thing I like the most about my job: history.

Yes, you read that right; history.

When working with paper files, you are probably not dealing with less than ten years old documents; you are most likely handling documents that are 20, 30, 40 years old. Sometimes paper in these files is significantly older.

So far, the one that left the most significant mark on my memory was a certificate issued by the Canadian Government in the early 1900s. Yes, the paper was more than 100 years old! It was so old that it had a King’s Seal! The seal looked similar to the one for King George VI logo from en.wikipedia.org.

Do you know what this means? It means that they issued that document while Queen Elizabeth II was still a princess!

I’m a history aficionado. I’m so passionate about the subject that I regret getting a major in journalism rather than history. So, working in a place where I can see all these historical documents is incredible!

Combining to me is an adventure because you never know what you will find inside a box; it can be a document with the King’s Seal, a letter sent in the 2000s and that no one ever opened, Canada’s map dating from the 1950s, or even photos from a company Christmas Party from the 1980s.

The adrenaline of the unknown it’s what makes combining so attractive to me.
